The 64th annual St. Patrick’s Parade in Scranton brought tens of thousands together despite chilly weather, with 140 organizations filling the parade route.

SCRANTON, Pa. — Bagpipers made their way down Wyoming Avenue in Scranton Saturday morning for the 64th annual St. Patrick’s Parade.

Despite the chilly and windy weather, A sea of green flooded the electric city.

“Oh, we’ve been coming all our life. From my kids up to my granddaughter here, and my grandsons and everything. We love the parade! It’s wonderful. I wish the weather was nicer, but,” said Julie Nenish from Scranton.

Over 140 organizations filled the parade route. One special guest in the parade for the first time, celebrating his Irish roots.

A retired Irish American professional boxer from Lowell, Massachusetts, “Irish” Micky Ward.

“It’s great just to see the people here. I come down to see my friend Nathan Barrett, and I do some stuff with Nathan. It’s a great time. It reminds me of back home. I love the people of Scranton,” said Ward.

This year’s president for the Scranton St. Patrick’s Parade Association is Jude McDonough.

“You know, seeing all these kids having a lot of fun. The step dancers. It’s just all the energy. Everybody is out of their houses. They’re out having fun, finally, after what was a very long winter,” said McDonough.

The parade route was packed with tens of thousands of people, including some from our very own WNEP team.

Meghan Murray from Hunlock Creek says she comes every year with her husband.

This year, they brought the family along.

“Actually, this is their first year. Yes. They wanted to come out this year, and we kind of just said you have to come, and they came,” said Murray.

Like many, they love watching the bagpipes go by.

“The bagpipes, the cars, and I want to get a shoutout to my Local 524 right out of Scranton here,” said Hunlock Creek resident Dan Harris.

From bagpipes to step dancers, the electric city was proudly painted green.
