Eugene ‘Gene’ Louis Cole

OBITUARY

Eugene “Gene ” Louis Cole, 93, of Dalton, passed away Thursday at Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center in ICU. His beloved wife of 65 years is the former Mary Ellen McCabe. The couple was married October 21, 1961 in St. Mary’s of Mount Carmel Church, Dunmore.

Born November 22, 1932 in Port Huron, Michigan, son of the late Elmer H. and Beatrice Towle Cole, Gene proudly served his country in the United States Army and was honorably discharged as a Captain with the Army Medical Specialist Corps and was awarded the Good Conduct Medal. Gene earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Physical Therapy and graduated Summa Cum Laude from Boston University. He later earned his Masters of Business in Hospital Administration from Wagner College. A man who truly loved his work, Gene was head of the Physical Therapy Department at Mercy Hospital, then became Vice President and Head Director of Physical Therapy Department at Allied Services, and finally retired as Head of the Physical Therapy Department at Barnes Kasson Hospital, Susquehanna at the age of 83. Of the presbyterian faith, Gene attended both the Covenant Presbyterian Church in Scranton, as well as the Clarks Summit United Methodist Church.

A loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and uncle, Gene had a work ethic like no other. He truly cared for not only his vocation, but more so for his patients, and people in general. Helping others to cope with their pain and improve their health brought passion and fulfillment to Gene’s life. Gene also enjoyed spendings great deal of time tending to his yard. Gene leaves behind a legacy that will not soon be forgotten.

Surviving in addition to his wife are, his daughter, Katie Jackson, and husband, Morris, Clarks Summit; his grandchildren, the apples of his eye, Olivia Rose and Callen Francis Jackson; a nephew, P.J. Spindler, Theresa McCabe, Jerry McCabe and wife Suzee, Kate Burne and husband R.J., and Paul Ruddy.

He was proceeded in death by his siblings George Cole and Odette Spindler and his in-laws Francis T. McCabe and wife, Rose Maloney McCabe, Robert F. McCabe, Ann Ruddy, and Frances Diskin Galson.

Services will be private at the convenience of the family at the Kevin K. Kearney Funeral Home, Inc., 125 N. Main Avenue, Scranton. Interment will also be private in the Cathedral Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Countryside Conservancy, La Plume, PA or a charity of their choice.
