Kennywood Boulevard was shut down on Sunday afternoon as police responded to the area during a preplanned march in remembrance of a teen killed during a pedestrian crash last year.
The roadway was closed between Hoffman Boulevard and Glenn Boulevard as of 3:30 p.m., authorities said. Four people were arrested, according to police on scene. One officer also sustained minor injuries.
It was not immediately clear what prompted the police response. The march was a scheduled protest to remember Terrel Byars Jr., who a 6th grader in the East Allegheny School District.
Those who planned the peaceful protest also did so to circulate a petition that asks for Kennywood Boulevard to be renamed in Byars’ honor, for the speed limit to be lowered, and for a bench to be placed at the nearby bus stop for riders.
