With tornadoes and damaging winds possible on Monday in central Pennsylvania, York County Emergency Management has issued a tornado safety reminder on social media.
Following NOAA guidelines, during a tornado, people should:
Go to a safe location on the lowest level of a sturdy building, away from windows. If outside, get in a car, buckle up, and try to drive to the closest sturdy shelter. Reminder, never seek shelter under a bridge and only lie flat in a ditch as a last resortGo to a secure storm shelter if you live in a mobile home.
The importance of proper planning cannot be understated, according to the emergency management office.
People are urged to ensure all family members know the tornado-safe location in the home. An emergency kit should be kept in a safe location in the home as well.
As for our furry friends, make sure preparations for pets are underway at the first sign of an approaching severe storm. Dogs should be put on a leash, and cats should be stored in carriers before being moved to the shelter.
Emergency management officials announced that the Emergency Operations Center will be activated Monday afternoon and evening in response to the severe threat.
