BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Friends of the Bethlehem Mounted Police (FBMP) announced Monday it has been awarded a $50,000 state grant that enabled critical infrastructure improvements for the Mounted Patrol Unit.
According to a press release from the organization, the grant funding was used for excavation, site prep, and construction of a round pen — a dedicated training space designed to enhance the safety, readiness, and performance of the mounted police horses and officers.
The newly constructed round pen provides a controlled environment for foundational training, conditioning, and skill development. This purpose-built facility allows officers to safely work with their horse partners on essential maneuvers, desensitization exercises, and trust-building techniques that are vital for effective patrol work in urban and community settings.
“The Bethlehem Police Department’s Mounted Patrol Unit is an asset to our City as it patrols our nature trails and parks best served by hooves or provides important community outreach and education to our citizens,” Senator Lisa Boscola stated.
Mounted police play a unique role in Bethlehem, offering a highly visible and approachable presence at festivals, parades, parks, and while on patrol. The dedicated training space helps ensure the horses remain calm, responsive, and confident in busy public settings, enhancing both safety and positive community interactions.
“This investment in training infrastructure directly supports the mission of the Bethlehem Mounted Police,” said Marissa Zondag, FBMP Board President. “A dedicated round pen allows our unit to train more efficiently, safely, and consistently, ensuring both horses and officers are prepared to serve the community at the highest level.”
Friends of the Bethlehem Mounted Police is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting the Mounted Patrol Unit through fundraising, advocacy and community partnerships.
