Officials in South Jersey are warning everyone to check the status of their pets’ rabies vaccines after a wild raccoon tested positive for the disease following a fight with a dog.
The wild raccoon and the dog got into a fight near Blue Jay Lane in Mount Holly on Thursday, March 11, 2026, according to the Burlington County Health Department.
After the raccoon died, health officials said they tested it for rabies and the results came back positive.
The family of the dog was contacted, officials said. The dog is up to date with its rabies vaccinations and recently got a booster.
All residents in Burlington County are being urged to check the vaccination status of their pets in light of this incident.
If you or someone you know has been bitten or scratched by a wild animal within the last month, you are urged to alert your doctor.
As of March 16, the Burlington County Health Department says that it is not aware of any other humans or pets who have been exposed to the disease.
