BLAIR COUNTY, Pa (WJAC) — Voters in Blair County’s 79th legislative district have elected their new representative in the Pennsylvania State House. Republican candidate Andrea Verobish will now represent the 79th district after receiving 5,330 votes compared to 3,923 votes garnered by her democratic opponent, Caleb McCoy. Tuesday’s special election was held following now former republican representative Lou Schmitt vacating his seat to become a judge in Blair County’s Court of Common Pleas.

Verobish is now joining a long line of republicans who have held the 79th district position since the late 1970s. With a 102 to 101 democratic majority in the Pennsylvania House, Verobish says her win is not just significant for the region, but for the entire state.

She tells 6 News she plans to address topics such as abortion, 2nd amendment protections, and boosting energy resources in the commonwealth.

When speaking with her following her opponent’s concession, Verobish said she was feeling a lot of emotions, adding, “this has been a lot of work the past two months, we’ve done a lot of grassroots, so I’m exhausted both emotionally, physically, everything, but I’m very excited, excited to get a step into office and see what happens next.”
