Erie County victim loses thousands in “AI-generated FBI scam”

A scammer in Erie County used an artificial intelligence-generated image to pose as an FBI agent, scamming a victim out of $4,000.The Pennsylvania State Police say the picture was sent to the victim by someone claiming to be an FBI agent named Joshua Robert Simmons, showing a background of himself working in an FBI office that investigators say is clearly AI-generated.’Agent Joshua'”Agent Joshua” told the victim he was investigating suspicious activity on the victim’s credit card accounts, leading to the scammer obtaining $4,000 in Apple gift cards.The suspect also attempted to persuade the victim to make a down payment on iPads and iPhones at a local T-Mobile store.The 8 On Your Side team has been reporting on how scammers are using artificial intelligence for new and improved scams, and this case is another example.While there is AI detection software available, the best defense is to question everything you see and hear from this point forward to protect your money and personal information.
