NEWTON TWP., LACKAWANNA CO. (WOLF) — A bridge in Newton Township has been closed indefinitely after county officials determined it is no longer safe for traffic.

Lackawanna County announced the immediate closure of the bridge located at Airport Drive and Route 307. The decision was made following a recommendation from the county’s Roads and Bridges Department and its engineer.

Officials say the structure’s headwall has been deemed unsafe, prompting the shutdown.

Drivers in the area will need to follow a detour, as an alternate traffic pattern has been put in place.

Emergency services, including the county’s 911 center, along with township officials and PennDOT, have been notified of the closure.

There is no word yet on when the bridge may reopen.
