In downtown Erie this Friday, emotions filled the federal courthouse as a new group of neighbors marked a milestone years in the making. Thirty‑five people from 18 different countries officially became United States citizens.

The room was filled with families and flags as the 35 candidates raised their right hands, completing a process many have spent years working toward.

Today marks an emotional fresh start for the country’s newest citizens as they begin their next chapter right here in Erie.

One new American shared just how significant the moment felt, saying the journey is forever part of their story and that today brought a sense of finally being settled.

I also spoke with a coordinator from New American Affairs who says ceremonies like this matter now more than ever.

“It was really nice going to the ceremony to see everyone’s — all the applicants’ loved ones there. It really shows how much work and effort and persistence it takes to get to this spot. And it was just so nice to be around all my loved ones, especially with my mom and dad, to go through this process and finally get our citizenship,” said Kiara, a new citizen from Erie, Pa.

“There’s a lot of misinformation, and it’s important for us to educate ourselves first and foremost, and educate the people who choose to make Erie home, and let them know that we support them,” said Muji Ahmed, the coordinator for New American Affairs.
