PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — A dominant fourth quarter powered Stony Brook women’s lacrosse to a 12-7 win over Drexel on Friday night in Philadelphia.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Dragons struck first, bouncing in a free-position goal to take the early 1-0 lead. This advantage would only last a little over two minutes as Katie Walsh and Haydin Eisfeld each scored to put the Seawolves up 2-1 with 10:10 remaining in the first quarter. Both Stony Brook and Drexel scored one more goal in the quarter, with the Seawolves in front 3-2 going into the second quarter.
Stony Brook flexed its muscles early in the second quarter, dominating possession and scoring three quick goals, now leading 6-2 with 12:13 left in the first half. Offense slowed down for both teams after the opening surge from the Seawolves, with only two more goals being scored for the remainder of the quarter, both of which were scored by the Dragons, cutting their deficit to two goals heading into halftime.
Drexel tallied the first goal of the second half after forcing a caused turnover and bouncing in a goal to make it a one-goal game. Continuing their momentum, the Dragons tied things up at 6-6 with 8:36 on the clock in the third quarter. They followed that up with a goal in the closing minutes of the third, giving the home team a 7-6 lead.
Stony Brook’s scoring drought ended in the opening minute of the fourth quarter with a goal from Keira Martin, tying the game at 7-7. Isabella Caporuscio then took control of the play, scoring two goals in just 59 seconds to put Stony Brook ahead 9-7 with 9:35 remaining. The Seawolves would ride this momentum for the rest of the play, scoring the next three goals and holding the Dragons scoreless to secure the 12-7 win in Philly.
