A Reading man is in Berks County Jail following his arrest on charges that he fired a gun into an occupied car at a gas station near his home early this month, wounding a woman.
Justin J. Ellison, 30, of the 1100 block of North Ninth Street was jailed in lieu of $50,000 bail following arraignment Thursday night before District Judge Gail M. Greth in Reading Central Court.
Ellison faces charges of aggravated assault, reckless endangerment and carrying a firearm without a license.
The shooting happened March 8 shortly before 2 a.m. at the fuel pumps of Sunoco A-Plus, 720 Spring St., police said.
According to court records:
Police were dispatched to Reading Hospital about an hour after the shooting after the victim arrived by private vehicle for treatment of a gunshot wound to the upper arm and chest.
The victim told officers she was at an after-hours establishment in the area of Nicolls and Spring streets with a few friends. Her group left the establishment and walked to the gas station, where they entered a car, which they moved to the gas pumps.
Someone from her group went into the store to pay for gas, then returned to pump the gas before getting back in the car.
While the victim was in the back seat behind the driver, she heard gunshots and felt pain on her left side.
Police obtained footage from store cameras that shows Ellison inside for several minutes. He exits the store at about the same time as the member of the victim’s group and is seen carrying a plastic shopping bag while walking east through the lot before heading south in the 1000 block of Nicolls Street, positioning himself directly across from the Sunoco.
The footage shows two apparent muzzle flashes that appear to be directed toward the area of the victims’ car. Immediately after the flashes, Ellison turns the corner and walks east on the 700 block of Spring. City-mounted cameras showed him heading north on North Ninth, east on Robeson Street and north onto the 1100 block of North Mill Street.
Police learned Ellison resides about two blocks from the gas station.
