How It Happened
On the defensive side, the hosts couldn’t have asked for a better start. Shurtleff retired the Big Green in order, but Dartmouth starter Marco Dumsky also kept Penn from finding any offensive momentum.Â
The visitors took an early lead in the second inning. Taer Rodriguez logged Dartmouth’s first hit of the day, a single through the right side, which advanced Sam Andersen–who had walked earlier in the frame–to third. Rodriguez eventually stole second and Andersen scored on a fielder’s choice RBI by Stefan Di Corrado. The Big Green’s second run crossed home plate courtesy of an RBI single from Camden Rush.
Following a scoreless third frame, Penn tied the game at two runs apiece in the fourth. Echevarria began the inning with a leadoff single and Degnan followed up with a double to right field. Spaventa allowed Echevarria to cross home plate via his groundout to third base, and Degnan made the trek home after an RBI double to right-center field from Pokrovsky.
Both pitchers took control of the contest in the fifth inning, but the Quakers garnered their first lead of the day in the sixth frame. Spaventa got things going by launching a solo home run to left field with one out, his third of the year. Pokrovsky then registered a single up the middle and later scored thanks to an RBI single by Nick O’Brien.
The Red and Blue’s final run of the day was tacked on in the seventh inning when Degnan hit a sac fly to center field, scoring Echevarria.
Despite holding a three-run advantage, reliever von Zuben came up big in the eighth inning by striking out Henry Murray while the bases were loaded. The Warrington, Pa. native went on to claim his second save of the year, finishing with two strikeouts in 1.2 innings.
