The WPIAL soccer playoffs continued Thursday, with Quarterfinal Round action in Boys Class 2A and Girls Class 3A and Class 4A.

All four matches in Girls Class 4A were tight affairs, with the top three seeds (Peters Twp, Seneca Valley and Norwin) moving on, while No. 5 North Allegheny survived penalty kicks to oust section rival, Pine-Richland.

WPIAL Girls Class 4A Playoff Schedule & Bracket
Quarterfinal Round (Thursday, October 23)

Updated Girls Class 4A Bracket

7 p.m.  #8 Canon-Mac at #1 Peters Township

One of two in-section clashes on Thursday, as Canon-Mac and Peters know each other all too well.  While Peters swept the Big Macs (1-0, 6-2) in the regular season, the first time around, the match went to extra time.

Peters, the defending champs, racked up a plus-40 goal differential during the regular season.  Anchoring things in the back for Peters is last year’s Moe Rosensteel Award recipient, Molly Kubistek, the first goalkeeper to win the prestigious honor.  With a combined 37 goals, Brynn Busch (20) and Marina Hajnosz (17), provide a dangerous 1-2 punch that keeps a lot of opposing backlines on their toes.

With Youngstown St commit, Rachel Tomley, leading the attack, Canon-McMillan has been in the mix all season in a very tough section, winning four of its last five matches.  With a balanced roster of experience and youth, Canon-Mac can be a team that could be dangerous if they start building confidence in postseason. And they did just that on Monday, beating Latrobe, 4-1.

7 p.m.  *5 North Allegheny at#4 Pine-Richland

Familiarity breeds contempt, as Section rivals will meet in the quarterfinal round.  In the first two matches, in over 180 minutes of play, only one goal was scored between the two teams, with Pine-Richland winning 1-0, in the return match after the first round ended up scoreless.

The standard is always high for North Allegheny program, as Kieran Shannon and Emma Schupansky are among top players for a talented squad that ended up finishing behind both Seneca Valley and Pine-Richland in Section 1 this year.  One coach shared with PSN, midfielder Rosalia Varlotta adds to the NA arsenal: “A complete player who can hurt you in many ways.”

As it goes in Class 4A among the top line programs — the Tigers have some high-quality wins (splitting the season series with Seneca Valley, beat No. 1 Peters Township, beat 3A No. 1 Fox Chapel) so they may be the most dangerous team out there who didn’t earn a first-round bye.

NA had a chance to get into a playoff groove, with a 7-0 first round win against Armstrong.  Senior forward Averie Bierker scored twice, while solo goals from junior Rosalia Varlotta, junior Bella Montgomery, senior Maddie Williams, junior Kieran Shannon and junior Mwende Abai propelled the Tigers to the quarterfinals.

Head Coach Jordan Wiegand has won a WPIAL title with Pine-Richland — on the boys side — in 2022.  This may be one of the best opportunities for the Girls to make a deep run.

“I am very proud of my girls at this point in our season. They have proven to be a top team in the WPIAL this season. We have faced many great opponents from all classifications that have pushed us that will certainly help as we set our sights towards the postseason.” Wiegand told PSN in early October.

Wiegand has a talented group, including Lily Rosenwasser, who recently committed to Eastern Michigan .

“It sounds crazy to say but I still believe we haven’t hit our full stride just yet with overall play. The potential for this group is through the roof. It’s been fun watching this group grow together and challenge each other to be great. This will be the mindset that will help us reach our goals.”

7 p.m.  #6 Mt. Lebanon at #3 Norwin

This is also a rematch, from a very early season non-section encounter, which Norwin pulled out, 2-1.

While Norwin had a bye, Mt. Lebanon were pushed in its First-Round match when hosting Butler.

In a back-and-forth affair with seven total goals, the Blue Devils had to rally to overcome an early 2nd half deficit. Mt. Lebanon finally got over the hump, with Lilia Bhuta getting the go-ahead goal, then Scarlett Pryor hit the late game-winner for the 4-3 win.

Norwin had a bounce-back campaign, with an unbeaten record in Section 1, after losing two of its first three matches.  The Knights didn’t lose again until the last match of the season against 3A top seed, Fox Chapel.  Another big win for Norwin did come out of section, when they defeated Class 3A power Plum, 2-1 in extra time on Sept. 27.

7 p.m.  #7 Upper St. Clair at #2 Seneca Valley

This is the only match on the Girls 4A slate where the schools haven’t met this season.

Seneca Valley has continued is strong winning tradition under the guidance of one of the WPIAL all-time top coaches, Mark Perry.

Perry steered SV to a WPIAL runner-up finish in 2024 only to lose to Peters Township in a Final decided on penalty kicks.  With Karly Majeski, an All-State midfielder, leading the way this year, they have their sights set on winning the entire thing.

As one coach told PSN, “She (Majeski) is aggressive, fast, and always on the loose ball. You have to know where she is at all times.”

“Karly has been our best player in every game this year so far,” Perry told PSN in Coaches Corner in September.

“Haven’t seen a player better than her in the games we have played. Has scored a goal in eight of our (first) 10 games while being tightly marked in each.”

Upper St. Clair showed plenty of grit on Monday, rallying for 2-1 come-from-behind effort to beat No. 10 Penn-Trafford.

Just to point out how strong and deep the talent pool is in Girls 4A soccer in our area, Upper St. Clair boasts quite a few college-bound players — and even Natalia DiSora, who trained and played with Pittsburgh Riveters last summer, has been invited to be part of USWNT Youth Player Pool. Yet in this classification, USC much like NA, land in the middle of the bracket, having finished in third place in a very strong section.

If late season form is an indicator, the Panthers won three straight matches to close out section play then beat Wheeling Park (WV), then dropped a 2-1 non-section match last Wednesday after the brackets were announced.
