ALLENTOWN, Pa. — The Allentown Symphony Orchestra celebrated its second America 250 concert Tuesday night at the Resurrected Life Church.
Nine local composers showcased what the nation’s 250th birthday means to them.
Composer Ethan Monberg told 69 News he was inspired by Langston Hughes.
“I was really trying to embody what his dream for America is,” Monberg explained.
Joseph Burdock, also a composer, aimed to challenge the country’s political landscape.
“My piece is very much inspired by the current rise of fascism in the United States,” Burdock stated.
Composer Howard Buss, an Allentown native, reflected on the experiences of his grandfather who worked at a foundry underneath the 8th Street bridge.
“My piece is a tribute to laborers who helped build this country, people who sometimes worked under brutal conditions to make life better for the next generation,” Buss said.
The night’s performances featured different interpretations of American history, inspired by various historical texts, and the venue at Resurrected Life Church was no coincidence. It’s where the Liberty Bell was once stashed from the British.
“What is beautiful is that all these composers have come together to tell different stories of what represents the 250th anniversary of America, especially in this location where we learned the actual Liberty Bell was hidden for two years. It’s giving new voices, new opportunities to showcase their talent and their abilities,” said Daniel Djuro Goiricelaya, an audience member.
