PHILADELPHIA COUNTY, Pa. (WHTM) — A Philadelphia County man will spend the rest of his life in a federal lockup for the shooting death of a gas station attendant in 2023.

Chihean Jones, 41, of Philadelphia, was sentenced to life in prison by U.S. District Judge Kelley Brisbon Hodge, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania announced.

He was accused of committing two robberies, killing a gas station attendant in one.

One robbery took place in August of 2022 and another in January of 2023. In the latter, he shot a fleeing gas station attendant in the back, killing him.

“The defendant shot an unarmed man in the back because it was easier than chasing after him,” said U.S. Attorney David Metcalf. “He and his crew then pawed through the victim’s pockets, as he lay dying. In the face of such senseless violence and casual cruelty, this life sentence is richly deserved. We are all safer with Chihean Jones behind bars.”

He was found guilty at trial by a federal jury and sentenced Tuesday to life in prison for the murder charge and 20 years each for the robberies, to be served concurrently.
