A multitroop traffic enforcement sweep along Interstate 78 resulted in hundreds of citations and several arrests Wednesday as state police targeted unsafe driving across four counties.

Troopers from Reading-based Troop L and Bethlehem-based Troop M on Wednesday carried out “Operation Double Play,” an initiative aimed at reducing crashes and improving highway safety on one of the region’s busiest and most crash‑prone corridors. The detail covered stretches of I‑78 in Berks, Lebanon, Lehigh and Northampton counties.

State police said the operation was launched in response to the previous 12 months’ crash and crime statistics.

From Feb. 1, 2025, through Feb. 1, 2026, troopers in the four counties investigated four fatal crashes, 28 DUI‑related crashes, 201 hit‑and‑run crashes, and 72 drug and firearm offenses on the interstate.

During Wednesday’s enforcement, troopers issued 60 speeding citations and 143 other traffic citations, along with 92 warnings.

The operation also led to two DUI arrests, one drug arrest, one ignition‑interlock violation and two arrests on fugitive warrants. Troopers documented 39 additional violations during the detail.

Commercial vehicle enforcement teams conducted 20 motor carrier safety inspections, placing six trucks out of service for safety violations.

Participating units included Troop M stations in Fogelsville and Belfast; Troop L stations in Hamburg, Reading and Jonestown; K‑9 teams from both troops; and the federal Motor Carrier Safety Assistance Program.
