Three people are being treated for burns tonight after the Amish school they were in, in Crawford County, caught fire this morning.

Multiple crews battled the blaze in Spartansburg. The fire broke out around 9:30 a.m. on Byler Road, where fire crews say someone accidentally filled a lantern with the wrong type of fuel, causing it to explode and ignite the school.

Three people suffered severe burn injuries. Two were flown to Oishei Children’s Hospital in Buffalo, and one was taken to UPMC Pittsburgh.

Multiple students were inside the school at the time, but they were not hurt and were taken home safely.

A witness who did not want to go on camera told me the school was already up in flames when they arrived, with students running in and out as adults worked with first responders to get everyone out.

I also spoke with the Spartansburg fire chief, who said there are no other reported injuries connected to the fire.

“Corry, Elgin, Union City, and Bloomfield assisted, along with multiple urgent care units, and now we’re waiting on the fire marshal to conduct the investigation,” said Chief Chris Hughes of the Spartansburg Fire Department.

State police are also investigating, and we will provide any new information once it becomes available.
