Erie MetroParks has announced the appointment of Kurt M. Kresser as the newest Erie MetroParks commissioner after longtime commissioner James L. “Don” Miears resigned earlier this month, according to a news release.

Erie County Common Pleas Judge Tygh Tone appointed Kresser.

“Kurt Kresser’s appointment comes by way of an outpouring of support,” Tone said in the release. “Mr. Kresser has been an active member of our community for many years, and I am happy that he is stepping into this role as commissioner to continue his contribution to the area.

“We all wish him well in his new endeavors. He will be great.”

Kresser was born and raised in Sandusky and graduated from St. Mary’s Catholic High School.

He has been with Groff Funeral Homes and Crematory for over 35 years serving families as a funeral director, and currently serves as the manager.

“I’m honored to join the Erie MetroParks Board of Commissioners and look forward to serving our community in this role,” Kresser said in the release. “I am looking forward to working with my fellow commissioners and the dedicated staff to continue enhancing and preserving the natural spaces that make our parks so special,

“Together, we have a great opportunity to not only maintain these beautiful resources but also to increase public awareness of all the programs, activities and experiences the parks have to offer. I am committed to helping ensure that more people in our community can connect with and enjoy everything our park system provides.”

Kresser resides in Sandusky and enjoys being outdoors, hiking, biking in downtown Sandusky, and spending time on Lake Erie, the release said, adding that his favorite parks within Erie MetroParks is Edison Woods MetroPark and Castalia Quarry MetroPark.
