How It Happened
Penn 7, Cornell 2
After getting blanked against Dartmouth in the series closer last Sunday, Penn opened today’s first contest with a score when Gigi Ganje scored on a wild pitch. The same could be said for Penn’s second score of the game, when Hannah Graveline scored in the same fashion in the second inning following a Cornell tally in the top of the frame.
Â
In the same inning, Jaz Johnson was able to drive in a run via a fielder’s choice to give Penn the lead, one that would not give back. A fielder’s choice score of Cornell’s own came across the dish in the third inning, but Penn rallied to put insurance runs on the board.
Â
Between the fifth and sixth innings, Ella Utschig, Hannah Graveline, and Jade Montgomery would bring runs home via singles and a fielder’s choice to give Penn the series opener.
Â
Freshman pitcher earned her first clean sheet of her career, going 4.0 innings strong with only two hits allowed, two punchouts, one walk, and no earned runs.
Â
Cornell 7, Penn 6
Following the win, Penn looked as though it was on its way to win number two on the day. After a sacrifice fly gave Cornell the early edge, Penn came alive in the fifth inning. A drawn walk by Jade Montgomery, a hit by pitch taken by Ella Utschig, and a wild pitch allowed three Penn runs to cross and build on the one run they scored in the third frame.
Â
Lauren Holt, in the sixth, sent on straight away to deep center to make it 4-2, giving Cornell life heading to the bottom of the sixth. Penn would answer with two runs off an Alexis Youngren home run and a base on balls score.
Â
Up 6-2 entering the last half frame, things began to get shaky for the Quakers, who allowed runs off a single and a wild pitch to make it 6-4. Then Lauren Holt came back to bat.
Â
With two runners on and two runs deficit, Holt sent one deep for the second time in the game, blasting a three-run shot and taking the lead 7-6.
Â
Penn would not be able to find that tying run in the bottom of the seventh and ultimately fell to Cornell in the second of the double header.
