PHOENIX — The Eagles are signing former first-round edge rusher Joe Tryon-Shoyinka to a one-year deal, general manager Howie Roseman said Sunday afternoon at the NFL owners meetings.
Tryon-Shoyinka, 26, was the 32nd overall pick out of Washington in the 2021 draft. He was selected by the Buccaneers that spring and played four seasons in Tampa. He split last season between the Bears and Browns after getting traded to Chicago in November.
Tryon-Shoyinka (6-5, 259) has not lived up to his draft status in the NFL but he has had some moderate production with 15 sacks in 82 career games with 45 starts.
In the first four years of his career Tryon-Shoyinka had 13 sacks and 31 QB hits but in the two years since he has just 2 sacks and 6 QB hits. He did not record a sack last season.
But Tryon-Shoyinka fits a type that Roseman typically goes after when bargain hunting in free agency. He’s a former high draft pick who the Eagles are buying low on as they look to continue to improve their depth.
Earlier this offseason, they added edge rusher Arnold Ebiketie to join Jalyx Hunt and Nolan Smith. The Eagles made an attempt to bring back Jaelan Phillips, who ended up getting a monster $30 million-per-season deal with the Panthers.
