Kailey Tyler a Mercyhurst University student has been named as a 2026 Barry Goldwater Scholar. This achievement is one of the most prestigious awards an undergraduate can receive in the natural sciences, mathematics, and engineering field.
Tyler is currently a senior in the Applied Forensic Science program at Mercyhurst University. She regularly conducts research in microbiology with Dr. Raj Mohan and is the first Mercyhurst student to receive such an achievement. This competitive scholarship recognizes the potential for a research career from students who showcase outstanding academic achievement.
“Kailey’s selection as a Goldwater Scholar reflects her dedication to research and discovery,” said Rajinikanth Mohan, faculty mentor and professor at Mercyhurst. “She has demonstrated a strong ability to think critically, pursue complex questions, and contribute meaningfully to her field.”
Congress had established the scholarship in 1986 supporting those who pursue a career in science, mathematics, and engineering.
Tyler is one of 450 students chosen nationwide out of over 5,000 nominees.
“I’m incredibly honored to be selected as a Goldwater Scholar,” Tyler said. “This recognition reinforces my passion for research and motivates me to continue pursuing opportunities that will allow me to contribute to the scientific community.”
Tyler was nominated through academic programs and her research and will receive up to $7,500 each year to support her studies.
