ALLENTOWN, Pa. – Allentown City Council voted Wednesday to approve a resolution that will confirm the city’s intention to sell the city-owned property at 1001-10107 W. Hamilton St.

The property is the building which houses the 10th and Hamilton police station.

Mayor Matt Tuerk told council that the resolution will allow the administration to transact directly with the Allentown Art Museum, which is the intended buyer of the property.

In October 2024, the councilmembers at that time split 4-3 to authorize the administration to begin the process of selling the property with the intention of temporarily moving the police department in anticipation of a new police headquarters being constructed at 425 Hamilton St.

No one on the current council objected to Wednesday night’s resolution.

The resolution authorizes the mayor to execute all necessary documents needed to effectuate the sale to the museum.

Tuerk said the Art Museum’s intention is to demolish the current building to make way for a new multistory museum at the site.

The resolution will not allow the buyer to take possession of the property until adequate facilities for the police department are available for occupancy.

No additional details of the proposed sale were available.

Intersection upgrade

In other business, council adopted an ordinance to amend the 2026 capital fund budget to provide for an increase of $1.08 million to fund the upgrade to the intersection of 19th Street and Roth Avenue.

The city received a state Green Light Go grant for $798,480, which required a 25% percent match from the municipality.

The city’s match is $199,620, and an additional $89,290 of necessary funds for the project will come from the city’s general fund cash account.

Municipal golf course

Also Wednesday, council awarded a contract to GIS LLC, Easton, Maryland, in the amount of $82,400 to plan and design a new irrigation system for the Allentown Municipal Golf Course. 

The project will take the existing irrigation system and reimagine the system to ensure efficient water use, environmental sustainability, and reliable performance that supports high-quality turf and golfing conditions.
