KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) – Patrick Mahomes traded the football field for a reading celebration, joining 3,000 Kansas City students at the annual Lead to Read KC reading rally.

Students from 27 area schools attended the event at T-Mobile Center, a year-end celebration for their commitment to reading.
The morning featured performances by the Chiefs drumline and cheerleaders before Mahomes read “Ella and One Great Race,” by C.L. Fails, with the students.

“They’re coming in. They’re dancing to the Chiefs drumline. They’re going to party with the Chiefs cheerleaders. And then they’re going to hear from one of their own Kansas City superheroes, Patrick Mahomes, and even read a book with him,” Executive Director of Lead to Read KC Rhea LeGrande said.
The rally celebrated student progress through the Read for 15 program, a partnership between Lead to Read KC and Kiewit. The program has helped students show growth over their peers.
“I like to look at the kids while they are looking at Patrick Mahomes, and the look in their eye when they realize their hero cares about them, and their hero cares about them, and their hero cares about their reading. Their eyes are sparkling. They are engaged. And we actually put the book that Patrick is reading today up on the Jumbo screen, and the kids read along with Patrick Mahomes,” LeGrande said.
