One person was killed and six others injured Saturday night in a shooting at Pennsylvania’s Lincoln University, where chaos erupted during outdoor homecoming celebrations at the historically Black college.

A person found carrying a gun was taken into custody, and investigators are examining whether multiple shooters may have been involved. However, authorities believe there is no ongoing danger to students or staff, Chester County District Attorney Christopher de Barrena-Sarobe said during an early Sunday press briefing.

“We don’t have a lot of answers about exactly what happened,” he admitted. “What I will tell you is that today we’re operating as if this is not an incident where someone came in with the design to inflict mass damage on a college campus.”

Located about 45 miles (70 kilometers) southwest of Philadelphia, Lincoln University became the scene of panic when shots rang out around 9:30 p.m. outside the International Cultural Center. Tents and tables had been set up for tailgating and social gatherings following the day’s football game.

“It was a chaotic scene, and people fled in every direction,” the district attorney said, urging anyone with footage or information to come forward to the FBI.

Authorities have not released any details about the victims, including their conditions or where the wounded are being treated. The case is being led by Chester County detectives with assistance from state police and the FBI.

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro posted on X that he had been briefed on the situation and offered state support, writing: “Join Lori and me in praying for the Lincoln University community.”

Lincoln University Police Chief Marc Partee said the shooting had deeply shaken the school on what should have been a celebratory day honoring its history.

“If there was another word to describe that, that’s more impactful, I would use it,” he said, “but ‘devastated’ is a start.”
