CHESTER COUNTY, Pa. (WHP) — A mass shooting took place at Lincoln University on Saturday evening during homecoming celebrations, officials said.
The Chester County District Attorney confirmed there are multiple victims involved. Sources said there are at least four victims receiving treatment for gunshot wounds after being rushed to the hospital.
An investigation is underway and people are being asked to avoid the campus and surrounding area.
Chester County Commissioner Eric Roe posted on Facebook announcing the shooting, asking the public to pray for the staff and students there.
Governor Josh Shapiro said his administration is offering its full support to the university’s president.
He also urged Pennsylvanians to follow the guidance of local law enforcement if in the area while extending his prayers.
This weekend marked homecoming weekend for the Historically Black College and University (HBCU).
The shooting reportedly happened near the school’s football field.
It was reported around 9 p.m., which is when a tailgate event was happening.
Photos show belongings left behind in the chaos, and many people were reportedly trampled.
The school is located about 50 miles from Philadelphia, on the Baltimore Pike in western Chester County.
CBS News Philadelphia spoke to a witness who said they saw CPR being administered to a victim.
The university said it will be providing on-campus counseling to any students and stuff in need of support starting at 10 a.m. Sunday.
Students can also utilize an online service 24/7.
