Pennsylvania anglers could cast their lines for trout statewide starting at 8 a.m. Saturday, with the arrival of opening day of the 2026 trout season.

The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission is stocking around 3.2 million adult trout across 684 streams and 130 lakes open to public angling throughout the 2026 season. The stocking numbers remain consistent with levels maintained over the past decade.

The commission this year is releasing approximately 2.3 million rainbow trout, 698,000 brown trout and 128,000 brook trout. The average stocked trout measures 11 inches in length and weighs 0.58 pounds. An additional 72,000 trophy-sized trout measuring 14 to 20 inches are being stocked, along with approximately 18,000 golden rainbow trout averaging 1.5 pounds.

Partner cooperative nurseries sponsored by sportsmen’s groups and other organizations are raising an additional 1.1 million trout for stocking in public waterways throughout the season.

Licensed anglers may keep up to five trout per day measuring at least seven inches long during the regular season, which runs from opening day through Labor Day. The daily limit drops to three trout during an extended season from Sept. 8, 2026, through Feb. 15, 2027.

Fishing licenses and permits are available through the huntfish.pa.gov online portal and at nearly 700 license issuing agents. All anglers, including youth, must create their own account in the licensing system. A digital image of a fishing license stored on a phone serves as proof of possession.

Anglers can find stocked waters by reviewing the 2026 Trout Stocking Schedule on the commission’s website at fishandboat.com. Replenishment stockings are planned to continue throughout the spring.

Anglers fishing from boats must follow the commission’s cold weather life jacket requirement, which remains in effect through April 30. Anyone aboard a boat less than 16 feet, including all canoes, kayaks and paddleboards, must wear a life jacket. Children ages 12 and under must always wear life jackets while boating in Pennsylvania.
