The plane was forced to land due to “unknown engine problems,” police said.
PENNSYLVANIA, USA — Pennsylvania State Police were called to Interstate 78 Saturday morning after a small plane made an emergency landing on the highway.
The call came in around 9:19 a.m. local time, according to a press release. The plane landed on the roadway on eastbound I‑78 in Weisenberg Township, Pennsylvania.Â
The 1995 Commander 114B aircraft, operated by a 65-year-old man from Michigan, departed from Solberg, New Jersey, and was traveling to Indiana when the pilot reported experiencing unknown engine problems, according to a police press release.Â
The pilot tried to land at a nearby airport, but instead used the highway to land. He and his passenger, a 34-year-old woman from New Jersey, were not hurt, according to police. No one on the ground was injured.Â
Eastbound traffic was closed and detoured for about four hours before the reopening. Westbound traffic was not impacted. The plane was later towed to a nearby airport.Â
The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating the incident. No other information is known at this time.
