Families who hit the road for the Easter weekend still have one more trip ahead as they travel back home, and PennDOT is reminding drivers to slow down and stay alert. Officials say holiday travel often brings heavier traffic and an increase in crashes.
Easter weekend typically means busy roadways, from early-morning church services to family gatherings across the region. PennDOT officials say the combination of congestion, changing spring weather, and distracted driving can quickly turn dangerous.
“Get onto whatever travel app you like to use and give yourself more time,” said Jill Harry, a PennDOT official.
PennDOT is urging drivers to check their vehicles before heading out, especially tire pressure, windshield wiper blades, and fluid levels. Officials say spring storms can move in quickly, making road conditions unpredictable.
“During this time of year, keeping an eye on the weather is really important because it can fluctuate so much,” Harry said.
Drivers are also being reminded to buckle up, avoid distractions behind the wheel, and plan for extra travel time. Last Easter weekend, state officials reported dozens of crashes statewide that were related to weather conditions and speeding.
“Make patience part of your celebration and make sure you get back home safely,” Harry said.
PennDOT says the goal is simple: get everyone where they are going safely and back home again. Officials add they work closely with state and local police to increase enforcement and promote safe driving during busy holiday travel periods.
