Fresh off their historic national championship victory in Indianapolis, the Gannon University men’s basketball team is expected to arrive back in Erie at roughly 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.
The community is invited to welcome the Golden Knights home at Highmark Events Center, with doors opening at 4 p.m. The university plans to hold a short program, offer fans the chance to take photos with the team, and provide a close-up look at the championship trophy.
University leaders say the celebration will continue well beyond the team’s arrival, with plans to share the moment across campus and throughout the Erie community.
For many who made the trip to Indianapolis, the championship moment is one they’ll never forget.
“It was like a once-in-a-lifetime thing, just seeing the community come together,” said Gannon senior Madeline Emerson, who followed the team from the Elite Eight through the Final Four and into the title game. “It felt like we were at home, looking up in the stands and seeing all the maroon and gold.”
Madeline convinced her mom to come with to the championship game on Easter Sunday.
Emerson was one of only a handful of students who traveled to support the team, surrounded by alumni and lifelong fans who filled each arena with hometown energy.
“You looked out at those stands here in Indy, and you would have thought we were at a home game,” said Meghan Morphy, Gannon’s director of athletics.
Gannon University fans, alumni, and students commuted over six plus hours to attend the championship game.
When the final buzzer sounded, Emerson said the emotion of the moment finally hit her.
“One night I was crying like a baby,” she said. “It’s just such a special place to me. Their win is well deserved. They’ve worked so hard this whole season.”
For the program, the championship represents years of growth.
“When I came here as a freshman, we only won three games out of 35,” said senior Kaif Syed. “And now we’re national champions. It’s exciting to see the growth of Gannon’s basketball.”

The title marks Gannon’s first-ever team national championship, a milestone that resonates far beyond the court.
“This championship feels like such a shared accomplishment,” Morphy said.
For Emerson, it’s a moment that will define her time at the university.
