READING, Pa. — Another deadly shooting in Reading, this time on Muhlenberg Street.
This was the scene Monday night, with police flooding the 1000 block after reports of gunfire. Officers arrived just before 7 p.m.
“They responded down there and located an adult male lying in the street with at least one gunshot wound,” said Captain Cheryl Pentheny with Reading Police.
That man, later identified as 36-year-old Elimelec Vasquez, was rushed to Reading Hospital, where he died.
Investigators say this all started with a dispute over parking.
“This argument that resulted from this dispute escalated, where the victim was shot,” said Berks County District Attorney John Adams. “And he was shot by the father of the owner of the other vehicle. I don’t know that it was ever concluded that a car was even struck, but the father shot the victim.”
That father was identified as 43-year-old Luis Clavell-Gierbolini. Police say he lives on the same block and was taken into custody.
“They were able to identify the subject, and he was taken into custody and was charged with first and third-degree murder and related charges,” Pentheny said.
According to the affidavit, the suspect came out of a home with a gun and confronted the victim. Police say the victim tried to run but was shot. After he fell, investigators say the suspect approached him and struck him in the head with the gun.
“To escalate so much, now you’ve taken one person’s life, and another individual is potentially going to be in jail for a long time,” Pentheny said.
The investigation remains active.
