DUNMORE — The state State Department of Transportation’s construction season in Northeast Pennsylvania involving 67 new projects totaling $655 million will be the agency’s largest annual road-work program in the region encompassing Lackawanna, Luzerne, Pike, Susquehanna, Wayne and Wyoming counties, officials announced Tuesday.

“This year, we are excited to announce our district is bidding and constructing the largest dollar-value program in District 4’s history,” PennDOT Engineering District 4 Executive Jonathan A. Eboli said during a media event at the District 4 office in Dunmore.

Work-zone safety

With some of the 2026 projects underway and more to come, there will be more workers on roads and highways. Eboli stressed safety is a top concern and state police will enforce work-zone traffic laws.

“I want to stress this — the safety of all crews and the traveling public is our top priority as we make improvements to our networks across the six counties in the northeast,” Eboli said. “We urge you (motorists) to be alert for changing conditions, avoid distractions and drive responsibly in work zones so everyone can go home. We ask you to travel through each work zone as if your family member was working there.”

The grounds of the District 4 headquarters has a keystone-shaped memorial on display carved with the words, “Work Zone Safety Saves Lives,” and “Dedicated To District 4-0 Fallen Workers,” and contains the names of 11 workers who lost their lives in the district from 1975 through 1981. Those include:

• Joseph Caviston Sr., Lackawanna County, April 18, 1975.
