As part of their investigation, New York State Attorney General’s Office released surveillance video of a fatal pedestrian crash involving an off-duty member of the Erie County Sheriff’s Office.
The incident happened January 9 on Elmwood Avenue in Buffalo.
Investigators say the off-duty peace officer, working with the sheriff’s office, was pulling out of a parking lot on Elmwood Avenue when he struck a man, identified as Carl Slone, who could be seen on surveillance video crossing the street in front of the off-duty deputy’s pickup truck.

Slone, 82, was taken to a local hospital and died of his injuries on January 10.
The Attorney General’s Office of Special Investigation (OSI) released surveillance video from two nearby security cameras showing the incident. WARNING: The video contain images that some viewers find disturbing.
New York State law requires any incident involving a police officer, peace officer or corrections officer to be reported if the incident may have caused the death of a person by an act or omission if the officer was either on-duty or off-duty.
The investigation is ongoing.
