The Chicago Bears had to make some tough decisions this offseason, facing a tough cap situation. With four members of their safety position being free agents, the Bears only re-signed one of those players.

That was Elijah Hicks.

Chicago said goodbye to Jonathan Owens, Kevin Byard and Jaquan Brisker. While Owens and Byard were previous free-agent signings, Brisker was a player that was a part of Ryan Poles’ first draft class. It was pretty much expected Chicago was going to move on due to the injury history that Brisker had. But seeing the price he went for, it was a little surprising the Bears didn’t try to bring him back at that price.

It sounds like the Pittsburgh Steelers, who signed Brisker, were shocked as well.

When free agency began, the Steelers were connected to Brisker right away. He opted to return back home where he’s from and played his college football at Penn State, signing a one year deal at $5.5 million. But per one beat writer, the price was surprisingly cheap.

Mark Kaboly noted that on a recent episode of the “Kaboly and Mack Podcast”. Here is what he had to say about Brisker and the price the Steelers signed him at:

“Safeties are strange, especially in free agency. You’ve got a handful of top-level ones, and then even the ones that are not much worse or are in that second tier get paid a whole hell of a lot less,” Kaboly said on the Kaboly+Mack podcast. “Like the Jaquan Briskers, who the Steelers were just shocked that they were able to get him for $5.5 million. There’s no way that they thought — I know that they didn’t think that they’d get him for $5.5 million.”

After the Bears took Brisker in the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft, he started in all 52 games he appeared in. However, he has dealt with more than one concussion over the past few seasons. That has cost him to miss games over that time.
