PennDOT says the Bayfront Parkway Project remains one of the most significant transportation upgrades underway anywhere in northwest Pennsylvania.
“we celebrated this week On th e State Street bridge which was a huge milestone for the project” Brian Mcutly, The Disctrict one executive for PennDot says.
According to PennDOT, the work is especially important as traffic and tourism increase in the warmer months.
“the Bayfront area has changed dramatically over the past 20 years, shifting away from heavy industrial use like power plants to public spaces, recreation, and redevelopment. Those changes, they say, required major updates to the area’s transportation infrastructure.” Mcutly says.
“PennDOT tells me the Bayfront Parkway Project is currently on a good schedule. Major construction work is expected to wrap up by October 2026, with the full project completed next year.” Stephanie Logue reported
Beyond easing traffic, the project is designed to improve safety and accessibility for pedestrians and bicyclists. Plans include new and expanded trails, shorter crosswalks, pedestrian signals, and improved connections throughout the corridor.
Local leaders say the improvements will benefit more than just the city of Erie.
Franklin’s mayor says projects like this support the entire region by improving connectivity for residents, workers, and visitors.
“It’s a busy business district with a lot of people and a lot of foot traffic, so we’re working to accommodate people walking and bicycling,” Doug Baker the mayor said. “We’ve made an effort to connect to our local trail system so people can easily ride their bicycles uptown from the bike trails.”
PennDOT says drivers should expect traffic pattern shifts and delays as the next phases of construction move forward. Officials say updates will continue to be released throughout the construction season.
