The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins are starting to build a little momentum heading into the postseason.
The locals scored three goals in the third period as the Penguins picked up a 4-1 win over the Cleveland Monsters on Saturday night at Mohegan Arena.
The win clinches the No. 2 seed for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, and gives the team a bye in the opening round of the postseason.
The victory evens the season series with Cleveland at 2 with each team winning once on the other’s home ice.
Atley Calvert’s 14th goal of the season gave WBS a 1-0 lead after one, and after a scoreless second period, the Pens offense came to life.
Aidan McDonough scored twice, including one on the power play, and Tanner Howe’s empty-netter sealed the victory — improving the Pens to 44-16-7-2 on the year.
Joel Blomqvist got the start in net, stopping 24 of 25 shots.
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton ends the season next week with three home games. They host Hershey on Wednesday, Bridgeport on Friday and Rochester on Saturday.
