Susquehanna Valley Chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame

The 47th annual awards night and dinner of the Susquehanna Valley Chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame is scheduled for May 2 at the Bachman Conference Center, 633 Community Way, Lancaster, on the campus of Homestead Village. The event will begin with a social hour at 5 p.m., followed by dinner at 6 p.m.

The organization acts to perpetuate the memory of athletes in Lancaster and York counties who have brought lasting fame and recognition to the Susquehanna Valley area through their athletic achievements and contributions to sports.

This year’s inductees, selected by a vote of the membership, are:

• George Derbyshire: Coaching and administration, Manheim Central

• Robert Gramola: Officiating, Lancaster-Lebanon League

• Duane Koser: Track and field, Donegal

• Ryan Strickler: Football and basketball, Columbia

• Scott Vandergrift: Golf, Millersville University

• James Walk Jr.: Athlete and coaching, McCaskey

In addition to the six inductees of this year’s class, there will be two additional awards presented: the Jimmy Sheckard Meritorious Community Service Award and the William Mabel Most Courageous Athlete Award for a high school student in the Susquehanna Valley.

This year’s program is dedicated to Bob Derr, longtime Warwick coach and wrestling official.

Solanco Cross Country and Track Alumni Association

The Solanco Cross Country and Track Alumni Association will be hosting its annual Alumni Night from 4-7 p.m. May 4 at the Art Harrington Track Complex at Solanco High School, in conjunction with the Lampeter-Strasburg at Solanco varsity track meet.

This year’s alumni event will feature banner presentations for the 2026 Hall of Fame induction class. The group also will honor two historically significant teams with banners.

Attendees should look for the large white alumni tent near the start/finish line. This will be the gathering place for alumni, family and friends. The varsity field events will begin at 4 p.m. and track events at 5 p.m. The banner presentations will begin in the track immediately following the boys 1,600-meter run.

This year’s honorees are:

• Albert Beattie: In 1973, he was county champion in the 100- and 220-yard dash, as well as a District 3 medalist and PIAA qualifier in both events.

• Robbie Martin: In 1976, he was the L-L runner-up and district champion in javelin.

• Steve Shelly: In 1973, he was county champion and district runner-up in the 120 and 330 hurdles, as well as state runner-up in the 120 hurdles.

• Mark Musselman: In 1975, he was the county and district runner-up in the long jump and finished sixth in the event at states.

•Tom Barron: In 1976, he was county co-champion and district runner-up in the 2-mile run.

• Missy Payne-Rutt: In 1987, she was the L-L champion in the long jump and triple jump. She was district champion and took fourth at states in the long jump, and district runner-up in the triple jump.

Also to be honored:

• 1971 boys team: The first Solanco boys team to win the Lancaster County League championship.

• 1986 girls team: The first Solanco team to win the L-L girls Section 1 championship.

Columbia Athletics Hall of Fame

Earlier this year, the Columbia Hall of Fame inducted four individual members and honored one team of the past.

• William “Hougy” Hougendobler Jr.: A member of the Class of 1968, Hougendobler earned six varsity letters, three each in basketball and track.

In basketball, he scored 789 points in his career, averaging 14.4 points per game, and had 360 rebounds, averaging 5.8 per game. He was honorable mention All-County as a junior, and was voted first team as a senior, when he averaged 25.2 points per game to finish second in county scoring behind Jay Bucher (25.5).

In track, he was a member of the 1966 undefeated team that won the Lancaster County Championship and placed second at the District 3 and PIAA Class B meets. In 1967, Hougendobler was a member of the winning 2-mile relay team that set the county record in 8:22.0, and he finished fifth in the 440-yard dash in 52.2 seconds. The relay team finished second at districts and qualified for states. In 1968, he was a member of the mile relay team that finished third at the Penn Relays in 3:37.5.

• Kent Lutz: The 1972 graduate earned three varsity letters in wrestling (103 pounds), and was a member of the cross country team.

After graduation, Lutz continued his wrestling career at Stevens Trade School, and in 1975, he became a PIAA wrestling official for 11 years in the L-L League.

Lutz went on to serve as the Columbia Junior High wrestling coach from 1979-84, the assistant varsity coach from 1985-91, and as varsity head coach from 1992 through 2007 and again from 2016-18.

During his coaching career, Lutz was named L-L Coach of the Year in 2002 and 2005. His 2002 team won a sectional championship. Five of his wrestlers were named L-L Class 2A Wrestler of the Year and six won L-L titles. Twenty-two of his wrestlers won sectional titles and four were crowned District 3 Class 2A and regional champions. Eleven wrestlers qualified for the PIAA Class 2A meet, with three finishing second and two finishing eighth.

Lutz was previously inducted to the L-L Wrestling Hall Of Fame in 2021 and to the Susquehanna Valley Chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame in 2025.

• Erin Keiper Marek: A member of the Class of 2001, she earned eight varsity letters, four each in volleyball and track.

In volleyball, she played setter for four years and was All-League in 1999.

In basketball, she scored 1,119 career points. She was a member of the 2000 girls District 3 Class 2A championship team. In 2001, Marek was an honorable mention selection to the L-L and All-Section 3 teams and played in the L-L All-Star game. In 2001, she was the Danny Monk Scholarship Award winner and received the Wendy’s Heisman Trophy Award.

• Neil Oberholtzer: A member of the Class of 1969, the late Oberholtzer was the owner of six varsity letters, three each in football and baseball.

Called “the Golden Toe” in the local press, Oberholtzer made 60 PATS in his career, which set a school record. He made 41 PATS (eight in one game to break his record of seven) and one field goal in his senior year. In 1967, he was second team All-County placekicker, and first team in 1968. In 1969, he was selected for the County All-Star Football Game.

In baseball, Oberholtzer was Columbia’s starting center fielder.

With a football scholarship to Bloomsburg, Oberholtzer was a four-year starting kicker, amassing 54 career PATS and 14 field goals. He went on to serve as an assistant varsity football coach and head junior high coach at Columbia from 1974-80. In 2023, he was also inducted to the CHS Athletic Hall of Fame as a member of the 1968 football team.

• 1995 District 3 Class 1A championship football team: In 1995, Columbia won the school’s first district championship with only nine seniors on the roster. Head coach Mike Burke II’s team was led by captains Scott Rupp, Matt Smoker and Jason Springer.

In a 7-3 regular season, the team averaged 27 points per game and gave up only 15 points per game.

The team had arguably the biggest win in school history, beating Scotland 40-30 in the district quarterfinals. Scotland had been 9-1 and ranked second in the state, and had the PIAA’s best scoring defense, having only given up 27 points the entire season.

In the district final, the Tide beat Hanover 19-8. After a scoreless first half, Dom Meley led the way with a huge second half, amassing 132 yards, including a 71-yard run and a 20-yard interception return for touchdowns. Rupp had a key late interception at the 1-yard line. Leading the way defensively were Denny Stauffer, Mike Gambler and Mike Misel with 10 tackles each.

That team also made the program’s first trip to the PIAA playoffs, a 36-18 loss to defending state champion Southern Columbia.

Earning L-L Section 3 All-Star selections from that team were: first-team offense, Rupp (WR, KR); second-team offense, Bryan Gohn (TE) and Springer (WR); honorable mention offense, Meley (RB), Todd Kauffman (QB) and Maurice Maurer (RB); second-team defense, Matt Smoker (DE), Gambler (IL), Misel (LB), and Rupp (DB); honorable mention defense, Stauffer (IL), Jake Seifried (LB) and Maurer (DB).
