READING, Pa. – A 14-year-old boy was charged with homicide in a shooting that killed one teenager and wounded another in southwest Reading’s Oakbrook neighborhood on Friday.
RPD officers responded to the 900-1000 blocks of Scott Street around 10:45 p.m. for the report of a possible shooting. They arrived to find a 16-year-old girl with a gunshot wound to the chest. She later died at Reading Hospital, according to the coroner.
At a home on the block, the police said they found a 17-year-old girl with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to a leg.
Investigators said they determined that the shots were fired by the 14-year-old boy following a fight involving the girl who was killed and another girl.
The teen suspect, whose name has not been released, is currently on juvenile probation for previous crimes of violence, according to the police. Berks County District Attorney John Adams said he will be tried as an adult.
Adams called the crime “horrific” and said authorities will try to find out how the suspect obtained a firearm, which he said the youth “had no business having.”
