(WJET/WFXP)– Pennsylvania’s Infrastructure Investment Authority (PENNVEST) has awarded $18 million to the Erie City Water Authority to help with two water infrastructure projects, replacing old parts and making upgrades.

From that investment, $10 million will go to the fifth phase of the city’s Infrastructure Investment Authority project to replace roughly 1,250 galvanized connectors on private properties that were once downstream of lead parts that have since been replaced.

The other $8 million will go towards funding work on their targeted distribution system, along with renovating the water authority’s main maintenance facility on West 12th Street, which eventually includes plans to replace pipes on Erie’s east side.

Elected state officials said neighborhoods with household incomes at or below the state’s median will get first priority with work, including service line replacement, excavation, backfill and surface restoration, while speaking to the importance of the projects.

Project to fix up Albion roads starts Monday

State Reps Bob Merski and Pat Harkins said the 12th Street facility renovations will include selective demolition, asbestos abatement, structural and general trades, installation of a building‑wide fire suppression and alarm system, new plumbing and HVAC, and electrical and security upgrades.

They also added that the later phases of the project will include pipe lining for select transmission lines and targeted water main replacements, including a full replacement along Bird Drive between East 27th and East 32nd streets.
