Bishop Lawrence Persico of Erie is calling for peace amid growing global tensions.

Pope Leo XIV, visiting Cameroon, condemned leaders who use religion to justify war, without naming specific individuals. His remarks come as the pope faces criticism from President Donald Trump over his opposition to U.S. and Israeli military actions in Iran.

In a statement released Friday, Bishop Persico pointed to Pope Leo’s role as a moral guide, urging Catholics , and all people, to follow Gospel teachings in their public and personal lives. He emphasized that peacemaking goes beyond politics and reflects the teachings of Christ.

The bishop also asked for prayers for Pope Leo, world leaders, and lasting peace around the globe.
