If you want your vote counted, please make sure that you can vote in the state primary that takes place on May 19.

The last day to register to vote is May 4. Also, know that if you are registered as an independent, you cannot vote in the primary unless you update your registration and choose a party.

As a poll worker, the worst part of my job is telling people who show up in front of me that they cannot vote that day. You have time. Please tell members of your circle of family and friends who may be less informed that they need to pick a party for the primary, when the candidates for the general election are chosen.

In a perfect world, we would not have closed primaries, but we do — and it’s up to those of us who are more engaged to reach out. It’s all well and good to vote in the fall, but if you want a defining voice, you need to vote in the primaries, and you must be registered with a party.

By May 4, register with a party for the primary, and then come out to vote May 19!
