WILSON, Pa. – Students from the Wilson Area School District got a fun lesson on science math and art outside of the classroom on Thursday night.
Hundreds of kids and their families showed up to the intermediate school for the district’s Family STEAM Night.
Wilson Area students are getting excited about STEAM.
“So, what we wanted to do was bring science, technology, engineering arts and math for all students in the district, K-8, and really expose them to potential career paths, and things that they might be interested in,” says Alexandra Mindle, Supervisor Of Curriculum And Instructional Technology for the Wilson Area School District.
Hundreds of kids and their families showed up to the intermediate school on Thursday to get in on STEAM night.
People got to test out technology like virtual reality headsets while hearing from different universities, companies, and local resources.
“A lot of community organizations are there talking about what are the opportunities in our community for students to extend their learning,” said Susan Austin, Computer Science teacher at Wilson Area Intermediate School.
As a part of the event, some students even presented their own science fair style, displays, and experiments.
“We used cardboard Ping-Pong balls, a picture of the sun, and just labels,” says one student.
“I had a lot of fun cause I got to do it with a lot of my friends in the class and we just got to make a bunch of moon phases,” says another student.
“We want the kids to be able to come out and show everyone their projects but more importantly to be able to talk about their learning,” says Austin.
Through mosaic making and machine testing, the night gives students a fun way to learn all about STEAM.
