On the verge of being swept in its weekend series, the University of Scranton baseball team scored eight runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to defeat Drew University, 12-10, in a Landmark Conference game Sunday at Volpe Field.
Drew took a doubleheader between the teams Saturday and held a 10-4 lead late Sunday. But Scranton sent 13 batters to the plate in the bottom of the eighth. With one out, Brayden Keller had a RBI single. With two outs, Aidan Casey had a RBI single. James Nitti and Hunter Petrich each drew bases-loaded walks. Conor Campbell’s bunt single scored the tying run. Jared Cassella capped the comeback with a two-run single.
Cassella finished with three hits for the Royals (23-12 overall, 12-7 league). Campbell and Casey each had two hits. John Heitzman’s infield single in the fourth inning was his 100th career hit.
Women’s lacrosse
At Arlington, Virginia, Marywood University defeated Marymount University, 21-14, to secure the No. 2 seed for the upcoming Atlantic East Conference tournament.
Natalie Yilanjian had six goals, one assist and three draw controls for the Pacers (9-6, 3-1), who beat the Saints for the first time since 2023. Avery Meighan added four goals and four assists along with 12 draw controls, 10 ground balls and four caused turnovers. Kaitlyn Smith chipped in two goals, five assists, five draw controls and three ground balls. Alivia Backes had a hat trick and Danica Kelly totaled three goals and an assist.
Flag football
At Philadelphia, Marywood University lost two games to Chestnut Hill College, 44-0 and 18-6, to conclude its inaugural season.
Erin Day threw for 119 yards in the second game for the Pacers and had a rushing touchdown in the fourth quarter. She also had two interceptions.
