LOWER SAUCON TWP., Pa. – The Bethlehem Landfill has acquired a property in Lower Saucon Township that is less than a mile from the entrance to the waste facility.
Bethlehem Landfill paid $900,000 for 2557 Applebutter Rd., according to Northampton County records. That property has one home on it, the records say.
69 News has contacted Waste Connections Inc., owner of Bethlehem Landfill, for comment. The landfill’s address is 2335 Applebutter Rd.
The landfill is in the township but is named for the City of Bethlehem, which owned it until 1998. It has been operated privately since then.
Bethlehem Landfill plans to expand, over the objections of some Lower Saucon residents and nearby communities.
Supporters of the expansion say landfill fees support Lower Saucon’s budget, while opponents say the expansion will damage the environment and threaten the scenic beauty of the Lehigh River.
The sale was recorded Feb. 20. The seller was the Lisa M. Walters Trust. Bethlehem Landfill owns several properties along Applebutter Road. The recently acquired property is east of the landfill’s entrance, just past Severn Lane.
Waste Connections is based in Texas. It operates in the U.S. and Canada.
Shares in the company are traded on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol WCN. The closing price Friday was $165.40, giving the company a market capitalization of $42.6 billion.
