An Upper Darby man has been charged with robbery in the township.
Leonardo V. Mena Rodas, 37, was charged with robbery, theft, receiving stolen property, simple assault, possession of an instrument of crime, possession of drug paraphernalia and public drunkenness.
Upper Darby Police Superintendent Timothy Bernhardt said the victim was approached by a male who appeared intoxicated in the 200 block of Garrett Road on Saturday about 12:45 a.m. and displayed what the victim thought was a weapon. The thief took about $80 and some personal items and fled.
Arriving police got the description from the victim and relayed it to other officers.
Police spotted a pedestrian nearby who fit the description and stopped him. The victim identified Mena Rodas as the robber. He was not carrying a weapon, it was a lighter.
Bernhardt credited alert police for quickly getting a description of the suspect and transmitting it to fellow officers who spotted the suspect leading to the arrest.
Mena Rodas was arraigned before District Judge Benjamin Johns who set bail at 10 percent of $150,000. Rodas was unable to post bail and so taken to Delaware County prison to await a scheduled May 7 preliminary hearing in front of Judge Johns.
