Bundra cites health issues

Coplay Borough Mayor Joseph Bundra has submitted a letter of resignation, effective April 30, to council. During the April 14 meeting of council, President Rick Kern read the letter, which cited health issues as the mayor’s reason for leaving the position early.

The May 5 council agenda will include the request for a resolution to seek a new mayor. A council vote on the resolution is expected at the May 12 meeting.

Council will then have 30 days to appoint a person to the mayor role. If that is unsuccessful, the issue will be moved to Lehigh County, whose officials will make an appointment.

In other business, council approved the borough planning commission’s recommendation to advance, conditionally, project plans on Silo Drive. A manufactured lighting warehouse is planned. The majority of the property on Silo Drive is in Whitehall; only 4% of the land is in Coplay Borough.

The approval is subject to the developer’s compliance with the borough engineer’s comments.

Council approved a Community Development Building Grant request for $123,915 to replace, and possibly update, fire suppression and rescue tools for the borough fire department. The grant will carry a $1,000 borough match.

An estimate by Cintas for floor mat replacement and cleaning at both borough hall and the public works building was also approved. The work will be done weekly for a maximum annual cost of $6,518.

Council approval an additional match, not to exceed $10,000, for a CDBG grant related to a paving and renovation project on 11th Street. During the work, it was discovered an additional coating of base fill on the roadway was required.

Borough council, during the meeting, also made some summer-related approvals.
