SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA CO. (WOLF) — Lackawanna County is celebrating Earth Day by taking action in the heart of the community.
The county’s Office of Environmental Sustainability hosted a cleanup around Courthouse Square, aiming to both beautify the area and raise awareness about the department’s work.
Officials say many people, including some county employees, don’t realize the office exists.
Markieann Muncie, an education specialist with the office, says outreach is a major part of their mission, from community education to hosting recycling events throughout the year.
“I always say to everyone, because sometimes people feel like they don’t make an impact,” Muncie said. “But I say individual action is still action. You’re still doing something. And I say we should make Earth Day every day.”
More than a dozen county employees stopped by during their breaks to help with the cleanup.
The efforts will continue this weekend. The Office of Environmental Sustainability is hosting an Earth Day event on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at McDade Park, featuring a variety of environmental organizations, resources, and services for the community.
