Ever thought about running away to join the circus? With ‘Wild Horizon’ at Cherry Street Pier next month, you can—at least for a weekend.
Centered on the universal human instinct to play, this new free festival invites Philadelphia families and audiences of all ages to experience contemporary circus, dance, and clowning with the backdrop of the Delaware River Waterfront.
The event is coming to life on May 2 and 3 after a year of community conversations, artist collaborations, and shared visioning. Produced by Almanac Projects in partnership with Ninth Planet and Rebel Arts Movement (and presented with the DRWC) the escapade will showcase a lineup of both local and international talent.
Highlights include immersive works for young children by Ninth Planet and Australian artist Stephen Noonan (The PaperBoats), plus all-ages performances from Well-Balanced Dads, Hooligans & Co, and Chicago’s Full Out Formula. The program will also feature dance by Philadelphia artists Esther Baker and Tammy Carrasco, site-specific juggling installations by David Chervony and Stephen Doutt, and new creations developed by Wild Seeds resident artists.
Throughout the weekend, Rebel Arts Movement will additionally host hands-on circus activities, inviting young people of all skill levels to participate, play, and discover new forms of expression.
There are four different ways to experience the festival: The ‘Knockouts’ deliver full-scale performances featuring world-class circus, dance, and physical theater; ‘Freestyle’ interactions invite spontaneous connection, movement, and improvisation in shared public space; and ‘Pop Ups’ offer what the festival calls “short-form adventures.”
At the heart of it all is ‘Wild Seeds,’ a residency program where international circus, dance, and performance artists spend a week creating new site-specific work directly on the pier. During the festival, audiences will meet these brand-new experiments as pop-up shows, roaming performances, interactive encounters, and “unexpected moments of spectacle.”
The arrival of ‘Wild Horizon’ also comes at a moment of real transition for Philadelphia’s circus arts community, following the news that The Circadium School of Contemporary Circus will be shutting down. Known as one of the only professional training programs of its kind in the United States, Circadium offered a rare space for in-depth study in contemporary circus technique, creation, and performance.
“This festival fills a hole left in Philadelphia’s cultural calendar due to the closing of several circus and performing arts for youth festivals over the last few years, and is truly going to be a gratifying, magical, and unforgettable experience for families,” says organizer Ben Grinberg. “At a time when public space increasingly feels like a space of violence, fear, and hostility, we hope this festival offers the chance to reclaim a sense of wonder and freedom, even if just for an afternoon.”
