Do you have any automotive waste lying around the garage? Things like used oil, antifreeze, tires or lead automotive, marine or tractor batteries that you aren’t sure how to dispose of?

Two area companies will be hosting recycling and collection events this week in conjunction with Earth Day. Both events are scheduled for April 25  and both will be held from 8 a.m. to noon.

East Penn Manufacturing will host a battery recycling event at its administration building parking lot, 95 W. State Ave., Lyons, Berks County, across the street from its manufacturing facilities.

And Chuck’s Auto Parts Solutions in Amity Township, Berks County, will host its 17th Annual Earth Day Collections Event at 6867 Boyertown Pike, collecting automotive waste.

East Penn Manufacturing is inviting the public to its Power2Recycle event to return their used lead batteries in a drive-thru event that will be held rain or shine, unless conditions are determined to be unsafe.

The intent of the event is to promote community awareness of the importance of recycling batteries and supporting sustainable products. It’s also designed to make lead battery returns more efficient, enjoyable and rewarding, the company said.

Lead batteries are among the most recyclable products in the world, East Penn said, and the company does the recycling on-site to make raw materials for its battery manufacturing facilities.

During the event, participants will receive double the standard reimbursement for every qualifying battery returned. According to Joel Brady, company vice president of marketing, reimbursement rates for the more popular battery types for cars, farm tractors and trucks normally range from $7.50 to $11.25.

“Saturday will be the only day these rates are doubled — all within a convenient drive-thru experience,” Brady said.

During the event, participants will pull into the parking lot of the administration building and follow posted signs. Participants will remain in their car as trained staff removes batteries and reimburses participants.

There are some guidelines to follow:

• A valid ID is required.

• There is a limit of three batteries per vehicle.

• Only lead batteries will be accepted (no lithium, alkaline or other chemistries).

Batteries that will be accepted are for cars, light trucks, marine, lawn and garden (and must be golf cart size or smaller).

No appointment is necessary, and the family-friendly event will include giveaways for children and chances to win prizes and learn about sustainable recycling practices, the company said in an announcement.

Chuck’s Auto Parts Solutions

This is the 17th year Chuck’s Parts Solutions has held the event to collect automotive waste like used oil, coolant, tires and lead automotive batteries. The event has grown steadily over the years, the company said.

In 2025, a total of 114 households attended to recycle their automotive fluids and waste, said Jordan Elser, marketing manager. He said more than 375 gallons of used oil was collected, as well as over 275 tires, 37 batteries and 95 gallons of coolant.

Since the event’s inception, Elser estimates the company has collected more than 2,500 tires, more than 5,000 gallons of oil, more than 500 automotive batteries and more than 1,000 gallons of coolant for proper treatment and disposal.

The event is intended to communicate the importance of protecting the environment by ensuring automotive waste is disposed of properly and does not end up contaminating waterways and communities, Esler said.

It provides accessible recycling options for automotive waste, items that should not be placed in household trash or recycling bins, the company said in an announcement.

During the event, the following items will be accepted at no cost:

• Used motor oil

• Antifreeze

• Automotive lead-acid batteries

• Tires (limit four per household)

Esler said the company doesn’t require any special packaging or handling for the event, adding that employees will empty fluids into separate holding tanks and recycle any plastic containers or return them to the owner if they would like to reuse them.

For every automotive battery brought to the collection event, Chuck’s Auto Parts Solutions will donate $20 to a local nonprofit.
