SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA CO. (WOLF) — From paintbrush to Capitol display, local student artists took center stage Friday at the Everhart Museum.
The walls were filled with local student artwork as Congressman Rob Bresnahan hosted an Art Competition Awards Ceremony.
Each year, members of Congress select a winning high school artist from their district, whose work is then displayed in the U.S. Capitol for an entire year.
This year, 17 high schools participated in the art competition.
First-place winner Arimeya Janov from Wilkes-Barre Area High School, created a drawing of apples, saying she enjoys illustrating fruit. She shared her excitement about having her artwork displayed at the U.S. Capitol.
“I’m so shocked. I feel so grateful. I’m so excited. I feel so blessed. It’s just unbelievable honestly,” said Janov.
“I just love the vibrant colors. And I like the golden frame. I just love it, it’s so beautiful. And I just fell in love with the picture, so I had to draw it,” said Janov.
Second-place winner Destiny Kyle, also from Wilkes-Barre Area High School, shared her unique assignment and the artwork she ultimately created.
“We had to pick an animal and given them an occupation. So, for mine, I was like, what animal do I go for? What job do I go for? Originally, it was just going to be a hare working as an investigator. And I decided, well, I’m going to give him a partner to work with. So I made an elk to go along with him,” said Kyle.
Students were also joined at the Everhart Museum by their friends, family, and art teachers.
